The MS Gym is a Facebook page created just about five months ago and growing in popularity. The creators, Trevor and Misty Wicken, recognized how underserved the multiple sclerosis community was in terms of being provided MS specific exercises in a simple, organized, and effective program and felt called to create a solution. As of today, The MS Gym has over 7,000 members from all around the globe and are adding members daily.
What is The MS Gym?
This patient focused multiple sclerosis fitness community uses exercise to manage MS symptoms, reduce pain, improve movement restrictions, increase fitness, and slow down the progression of MS using The RISE Movement System. This is a site for MS patients and their families to learn how to fight back against MS together.
The Facebook community opened on May 15, 2017 however, the vision was realized in 2010 shortly after Trevor lost his dad to heart failure and was coming to understand that there was more of an impact he was supposed to make with the gifts he has been given. In conversations over several weeks together Trevor and Misty wrote out their vision to set 1 million people free over 35 years from the physical and emotional pain that comes from living with medical conditions using The RISE Movement System.
Trevor’s background includes over fifteen years of experience as a medical exercise practitioner including a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Medicine from Colorado State University, and a Master’s Degree in Exercise Science from California University of Pennsylvania. His practice combines the disciplines of biomechanics, neurokinetic therapy, corrective exercise, and medically based exercise. Trevor has an extensive background working with clients of all ages, injuries and conditions, sits on many boards and speaks as an industry expert at live events, webinars, and on radio shows.
Misty’s background includes broadcasting, interning for CBS News 4, and working with corporate entities on creating branding strategies which is obviously shown in her platform and work with The MS Gym. Her passion, enthusiasm and knowledge radiates and she always has a positive word for everyone. Trevor and Misty are the perfect match and together their dedication and devotion spreads desire for accomplishment and triumph.
When you become a member of The MS Gym you are not only a part of a tribe and family to fight against MS, you also receive exercise videos Monday – Friday from Trevor with a full walk through exercise circuit video to complete on Saturday. You receive free exercise emails to download, motivational Monday pep talks from Trevor and Misty Moments broadcast videos on Wednesdays. The community supports and encourages each other on hard days and celebrates accomplishments on good days. It has grown so fast they have recently added moderators to help all members get responses in the group.
Not only that, a recent feature just added is for 2-5 people to buddy up as workout partners, cheerleaders, and accountability partners through Facebook messages, texts or phone calls. The MS Gym is a safe spot for MS patients of all stages to fight back and improve from physical and emotional pain.
The MS Gym is the real deal and when asked what the importance of their program is Misty shares:
“In my opinion- hope. We instill hope. Not just with our encouragement or the free resources. But the community. The biggest part of our vision 7 years ago was having a community who was active in sharing their victories, celebrating with each other, encouraging and lifting each other up and feel connected to one another.”
So far by their success stories, this program is working and at an extremely favorable outcome. Every story and person in The MS Gym matter to Trevor and Misty and their love and zest for what they do energize people. I live in Colorado and have worked and trained with Trevor on numerous occasions in person and I can attest that their genuine true and loving passion is just as real on video as it is in person.
The MS Gym is not only a labor of love but true success of physical, emotional and mental healing. The MS Gym has come about very quickly and there are so many stories of achievement. I asked Misty to share a victory story for us and she smiled as she said,
“Lovely Clare. Having been in a power chair for years, she committed to making The MS Gym programs and her healing a full-time job. In a matter of weeks, she was getting stronger and standing. As she started taking steps she sent us videos of her progress. Recently before she left for treatment she was up over 600 steps. This was all in a matter of a few short months!! She has captured our hearts and allowed us to walk alongside her on this journey. She like so many others are blessing us daily with their victories and it keeps us going!”
If I am in a wheelchair or can’t stand for extended periods of time, will this still help me?
Absolutely. Everyone starts at various places and all the exercises are either designed for you or can be modified to your ability. The MS Gym has programs designed specifically for MSers in wheelchairs.
If I don’t live in your state or country, do you have plans for workshops or seminars so I can work with you or a trainer trained by you in person?
Yes. It is a work in progress and we don’t have set dates. But expect opportunities in the next year for workshops and seminars.
If I don’t have FB how can I follow you?
By joining our email list. You can do that by registering for one of our free MS exercise guides.
